Why You Should Be Helpful Even If It Means Giving Business Away

Nobody likes giving business away, but sometimes, being super helpful and pointing the customer in another direction helps not only them but you. Here's why you should be helpful even if it means giving business away.

Why You Should Be Helpful Even If It Means Giving Business Away

Recently, I was contacted by a Virtual PA to enquire whether I would go to North London to do some makeup on a mature client and also if I did eyelash tinting. I explained that I was based in West London, but I could travel to North London if a travel fee was paid. Also, I don't do eyelash tinting.

I pointed the person to some local places and explained where they might find what they were looking for and wished them the best. They were so incredibly grateful and promised to keep me in mind in the future.

Now, had I said Yes to this situation, a) I would have been out of my depth. I don't do mature makeup very often, so I can't teach someone else to do it.

b) I live quite far away and it would be a trek for me to get there without a travel fee.

c) I don't do eyelash tinting, as this requires a licences professional.

It's always better, to be honest and tell prospective clients and enquiries what you DO and DON'T do. This helps you stay at the top of your game, but also only take on clients that match your current skill set.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't take on jobs that don't push you but know how far you can stretch before you take a job outside of your comfort zone. I'd never done mature makeup, but I gave it a go on my client L, and she was happy with the result.

In the meantime, I did a lot of research on what products to use and how to get the best effect, and now I feel I could do it again.

Stretch yourself, but don't break. You're only as good as your last job!

The other thing I would advise is to make friends with fellow makeup artists, photographers, hairstylists etc. and if a job comes up that you can't take, you can always recommend a hand-picked network of like-minded professionals.

This works vice versa as if a job comes along that they can't do, then they can recommend you!

Let me know in the comments the last time you gave business away and what was the result?
